Amazing strides have been made in treating Multiple Myeloma through the commitment to research and the courage of doctors, support staff, and the patients at Princess Margaret Hospital to continue the search for a better drug regimen.
As I write this I am being treated for a relapsed Myeloma and expect to undergo my second transplant in the coming months. I am confident that the Myeloma team at Princess Margaret and the team that surrounds me here and in my private life will see me through. I know I have options for treatment and am fortunate today because some of those options were not available when I first started this journey… but I also know that none of those options allows me to shut the door on myeloma. Myeloma may have no cure - the Myeloma you start with is not the Myeloma you will end with – the residual Myeloma protein that survives the current treatment becomes the driver in an inevitable relapse.
And so, we need to continue to fight – continue to understand the disease and develop the right response to an evolving cancer, and yes, search for that quality of life that endures.
