Walk for Jacques
Nearly a year ago, my Brother Jacques led us in a spirited walk from the Princess Margaret to Front Street and back, as part of the 2017 Journey to Conquer Cancer - Multiple Myeloma MM5K Walk. It was a bright and uplifting moment for all of us.
He was just weeks away from being admitted to the Palliative Care unit, his disease was advancing, and the toll on his body was severe. But Jacques didn’t dwell on weakness. He defied his body and walked with strength, conviction and joy.
That was Father’s Day. Jacques passed away 2 months later.
This extraordinary man filled all our cups to the brim and kept them steady until the very last beat of his heart.
This Father’s Day (June 17), we will walk again - together with Jacques’ widow Ophira, his son Jonah, the family surrounding them and many friends. In true Jacques-style it will be both meaningful and practical, as we support each other, the community of Cancer patients and families, and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.
Many of you have lived cancer and know how it changes everything… In a moment everything shifts, the fight begins, and then there are months and years of adapting, of finding strength and meaning. It moves family, friends and communities to tears and to action, and reminds us of what we can do together and what we cannot do alone.
This is about what we can do together.
The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is an important part of the international cancer research community, and one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world. They are forging the future of cancer treatment in our own backyard, and we are asking you to be a part of that.
Please give generously.
